Letting Fabian Delph go in January Could be a Naive Nail in the Villa Coffin

Fabian Delph £4 Mil Rumours

There’s been a lot of talk in the press over the last couple of days of Aston Villa being willing to let Fabian Delph for £4 million. Surely, that’s not true?

If Villa were willing to let Delph go, then if I was Liverpool or Spur (or any club), I’d bite Villa’s arm off to secure such a deal at that price. The Villa midfielder still has his best years ahead of him and he’s also impressed at international level since he’s broken through into the England set-up this season. Delph would normally cost comfortably over double the proposed £4 million fee, so there is a bit of leeway to pay more in wages to attract his services.

It’s a no brainer for any buying club, but what of the sellers?

Villa’s POV on Delph

With Delph looking increasingly unlikely to sign a new contract for Villa at the end of the season, due to the club’s current direction (and who can blame him), there will be a train of thought that says, lets get whatever we can for him. £4 million though? It’s nowhere near enough.

There’s no doubt that Villa are going to be involved in a relegation battle. They have by far the worst goal-scoring record in the Premier League and only Everton are below them in the last six game current form table. Avoiding relegation would lead to a multi-million pound windfall for the club with the recently increased Premier League TV revenue, which in comparison makes £4 million seem like loose change.

Would Delph improve Villa’s chances of survival and securing the Premier League TV revenue of next season? Hell, yes!

Also, there is now little time to replace Delph in the January window. Any bid for the Villa midfielder would potentially be on deadline day, leaving Villa with a bit of a whole in midfield, not to mention losing one of the only current Villa players it’s actually worth paying to see play.

Unless they get lucky, it would probably cost Villa a lot more than £4 million to replace Delph.

Carles Gil is obviously not a replacement and his potential impact could be dampened by the lack of Delph’s quick-mind in the midfield alongside him.

It’s for all these reasons you couldn’t see even Villa letting go of Delph at this stage of the season. If the board did and then the club got relegated, they’d only have themselves to blame.

  1. So Delph is suddenly our messiah? When did this happen? It wasn’t last season was it? He had a handful of decent games, gets 3 lions on a cap, and goes all Billy Big Balls. Wants a move. Decides to turn our offer down.

Lambert has no money to improve our squad and can anyone remind me how many assistsDelph ‘s had? Or goals he’s scored?

If selling him now gives us money to bring in one more creative attacking player I’ll take it. It’s not naive to be practical, it’s practical.

£4million or nowt, as Fab might say. We have done sod all with him, maybe we can be better without him?

    • And then, just as he was out the door, he turns round and signs for another five years, and fair play. He obviously got what he wanted. Now perhaps we can get what we want, and that would now be another attacking and creative midfield player, like Gil perhaps?

Delph needs to increase the quality of his final ball and improve his striking, but as he is in effect a free signing for us, I think Lambert has done well here.

Now Delph is staying, can we get shot of Tom ‘not so’ Cleverly? Villa have an abundance of decent competent midfielders but what we need are players who can not only tackle and pass but also beat a man and break free into the space that ability creates. Delph and Westwood and Sanchez are ahead of Cleverly for me. Free the space on the wage bill and do something exciting please Mr Lambert.

  2. Although not a great fan of Delph I do not think that £4m will help Villas cause. It is too little to buy a suitable replacement and at least we know what we are getting with Delph. We should accept that Delph will leave on a free in the summer and try and use Delph to secure the midfield for the run in. He has got to be a better bet than Cleverly who has been a major disappointment and will never be worth £7m of anyones money

  3. Sorry but Delph is shite. He has no end product whatsoever and is only a few Cruyff turns better than Westwood.

  4. he could leave and to be honest if he was replaced with a decent attacking player i would have no problem
    with that

lets face it,, we need goals and players who can provide assists,

  5. Villa said they was going to sign 1 or 2 players then changed there mind and now say no signings. So I don’t trust anything they say. Championship football for Villa next season. Thanks Lerner and Co.

  6. Why are we having this debate after both Lerner and Lambert have said Delph & Vlaar will not be leaving in the January window. We all know what these two say is written in stone don’t we?
Would they lie to us the paying public, course not. In Randy & Paul we trust.
