There’s Something Missing From the New Aston Villa Squad Numbers

Every year the list of the new Aston Villa squad numbers offers up at least some clues to the manager’s thinking for the season ahead. Remember 2013? When the bomb squad were given numbers more fitting for the back of American Football jerseys, those numbers basically spelt out that Paul Lambert didn’t want them?

Last season, Villa then began the season without a No.9. No wonder they struggled for goals.

This time round there’s no harsh number crunching to be had, but there is one number that interestingly doesn’t have a name attached to it…yet. It’s one of the numbers that in your school team one of the best players always had it, the No.10. Normally, the main midfield threat going forward or a striker took the number.

It was Pele’s shirt number, it was Maradona’s shirt number and it’s Messi’s shirt number.

Surprisingly, no existing Villa player has snapped up the No. 10 Villa jersey.

If I was Jack Grealish, I would have asked for it. If I was Rudy Gestede, I would have claimed it too. And, if I was Jordan Veretout, I would have certainly have said to Sherwood,  “Le nombre de dix-shirt, s’il vous plaît”.

What is it with these modern day footballers? Maybe I’m too much of an old school traditionalist and should just give up the value of having shirt numbers from 1 to 11.

Of course, there is another angle. Maybe the shirt has already been promised to someone? Somebody incoming? Emmanuel Adebayor? Or maybe even a player who actually wants to play for the Villa?

Maybe it will remain a carrot for a transfer of a player who wants to be Villa’s main man. We can but hope.

Here’s the list in full. Hats off to Idrissa Gueye for keeping it old school and picking the number 8 shirt. Micah Richards claiming the number 4 shirt was perhaps a no-brainer.

  1. Adebayour first half and Berbatov second half? Between them there might be enough effort for a full game

  2. Was hoping that N’Zogbia’s name was missing, so does that mean he is staying?? Would prefer Calder in there instead. I’m actually surprised Hepburn-Murphy got in above Calder?
