94: Aston Villa at Christmas – Should We Be Concerned?

Aston Villa – Should We Be Concerned? / RIP Ron

In a less light-hearted show than usual, we pay our respects to My Old Man Said’s first Aston Villa manager Ron Saunders, who sadly passed away last week, before analysing what is going wrong for Villa at the moment and should we be concerned?

We analysis why the possession trademark of a Dean Smith side seems to have expired in the Premier League, while putting recent results like the 4-1 home loss to Leicester City into context.

Is Smith’s ethos failing? What’s up with Wesley? Did someone just utter the phrase “Doing a Fulham” again?

Also, outside of the Villa-verse, we look at the concept of fan engagement through Socios, the latest crisis club, and the football implications of Russia’s Wada drug ban.

Coming up later this week, we will put out a second part of the podcast answering the Mad Few listener questions, before the next full episode, so stay tuned for that.

  1. Russ is right- DS is a class act but he is too stubborn. A 4-3-3 doesn’t always work. We’ve some of the best center backs (TM/JC/CH/EK/BE) in the league: try a 3-5-2. Or be pragmatic and play a 4-2-3-1. Got to disagree with most of you re Wes. Talked with Juan Pablo Angel on Saturday (really nice chap) and he agreed w/ me that NO striker at Villa is gonna score goals with no support or service. It’s a team game LED by a coach- who- sadly- at this moment in time, isn’t doing his job…

  2. We knew it was going to tough hold the faith at least untill end of Jan we will know by then what we need to do

  3. I agree with you but other people will wait till to late. He has no plan B nice bloke great in championship, but not good enough in premier league where you have to change things even if it fails be brave. Bust the bank get Poch.

  4. Concerned hell yes we’re in massive trouble, the club have to see that Wesley is not up to it, and if we hope to stay in the PL we have to sign a proven PL goal scorer in January, absolutely beggars belief that we didn’t sign Maupay for 6 m less than Wesley, it’s all falling apart We’re totaly light weight up front no goal threat, why did we give DS a new contract when we’re hovering around the relegation zone, why didn’t we wait until the end of the season and use it as an incentive, I don’t get how our board can justify this. I firmly believe before Christmas we will be well into the bottom 3 and most of it is down to bad decision making and to some extent poor team selection why isn’t Trez playing ? Drop Wesley and push Trez forward what’s to loose.
