Aston Villa Away Fans Potentially Could Go to Spurs Away This Season

Aston Villa Fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

The government has proposed to the Premier League that away fans could be allowed back for the final two rounds of the season.

With the Premier League moving round 37 fixtures back to midweek, 18-19 May, past the government’s Covid-19 roadmap date of May 17th for the return of outdoor sports venues hosting fans, it’ll mean each club will now have a home game with fans before the end of the season.

Originally, it was expected that only home fans would be permitted back to attend these final games of the Premier League season.

The allowance is set at 10,000 fans or 25% capacity, whichever is the lower figure.

Now it is being put forward that up to 500 away fans within the set quota, could be allowed to watch games in May’s final two matches.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters emailed clubs on Thursday to reveal the government plans allowing up to 5% of the capacity to be made up of away fans.

Apparently, the clubs were given a deadline to respond by the close of play on Friday, on whether they they were in favour of the idea. The club’s local authority would also have to approve the idea.

Mixed Reaction

According to the BBC, some clubs are understood to oppose the notion of having away fans, due to the logistical safety issues and them also wanting to offer a maximum number of tickets to returning home fans.

Certainly, at this point, it would be a surprise to complicate the return of fans to stadiums with an away fan allocation, but it’s a positive sign that is it’s on the table, in terms of getting an indication to what could happen next season.
