Aston Villa Eye Formation of Fortress Villa Park With Early Fixtures

Operation Fortress Villa Park Begins…

Despite having to deal with a bunch of early season injuries, Dean Smith demonstrated that his Aston Villa team now has geniune depth in the squad, as they beat Newcastle 2-0 in routine fashion to get the new campaign underway at Villa Park in successful fashion.

Saturday against Brentford at Villa Park, again looks like the squad depth will be tested as Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traoré and Leon Bailey remain doubts.

“He’s just felt his hamstring,” said Smith on Bailey’s absence from the Newcastle game. “He had an injury in the summer playing for Jamaica and it just tightened up in training and we just can’t risk it.”

While Traoré is definitely one for after the international break, few would expect Watkins or Bailey to start against the Bees.

It what should be a tough physical battle against a well-organised team, the threat and pace of Bailey certainly would have been a useful weapon to unsettle Brentford.

In terms of momentum, a win to establish home form momentum could be huge for Villa’s season. While the behind-closed-doors fixtures flipped the advantage of home and away form, if Villa are indeed to challenge for the Europe places then the archetypal home fortress must be built. Potential lower-half Premier League teams must be dealt with, but that said, Brentford at expected to be a stiffer test then the Toon were.

On the latest MOMS podcast episode (see below) we discuss how Villa fared against Newcastle and how it was being back in a packed Villa Park.

As well as discussing the game and the latest Villa news, the Three Points section of the show take us to Afghanistan, Wales and to Manchester City’s biggest signing this season.
