Aston Villa Face Potentially the Most Boring Game of the Season

I was originally going to run this title and article in the ‘A Venglos View’ column, but the possibility of it is actually a reality…finally Villa are going to play a team who are even worse in front of goal than they are.

After two consecutive 0-0 draws at Villa Park, Aston Villa now find themselves having scored only one goal in their last five games. Of course, this run isn’t an anomaly to Villa’s season, with the team having already gone on a goalless run of five goalless games after the 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield.

A switch to a possession-based brand of football hasn’t bared fruit yet, mainly because the drought in front of goal stems from very little wing play, lack of quality deliveries and predictable build-up play. In short, very little impact in the final third.

It’s often forgotten that Lambert began his reign at Villa getting his team playing the same possession-based approach they’re playing now, before ditching it for a more direct approach, due to the very same reasons the team is struggling with now.

Surely, the forthcoming FA Cup match against Blackpool, who are rock-bottom of the Championship, can offer a chance for Villa strikers to get back into the swing of things?

Well, you’d hope so, but there’s a worrying statistic about the forthcoming game between the two teams when you look at their form in 2014.

Look which two teams scored the fewest goals per game in English football in 2014…

Oh dear. It doesn’t look like the FA Cup third round tie is going to be a goal fest then.

Turning the corner on scoring goals is one thing though, as Lambert must also break his terrible record of losing to lower league teams in cup ties. A loss against Blackpool would be unforgivable and certainly entrench the growing supporter’s feeling that he’s simply not up to the task of managing Aston Villa football club.

  1. our defence is so much better now, as is the defensive aspect of the midfield,,
so i dont think we will lose,,
we have to do better from corners and free kicks,, as we cant sloce through, and there really is little point in sissoko crossing a ball,, or hutton,, they should be there to get to the byline and pull it back
the crosses should come in from bacuna and grealish,,,
i just hope we play442 or 451 with cole grealish and bacuna playing

at least we will see some wing play
