Aston Villa Home Shirt 1992-1993

The Aston Villa home shirt of the 1992-93 season, will forever be regarded by MOMS, as the ‘if only’ shirt. The most retro of all recent Villa shirts – in that it possessed a draw-string style homage of a shirt that had came 100 years before it – was close to becoming the first ever Premier League title winning shirt.

Ron Atkinson’s Aston Villa had led the title race going into spring, but slip ups against teams they perhaps should have beaten, let Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United sprint away with the title in the final furlong.

Still, it was a great season to support Villa home and away, and this shirt was front and centre of that.

Best Player to Wear the Shirt

Obviously you would say Paul McGrath was the best Villa player to play in the shirt, but for MOMS personally, this shirt was more synonymous with Dean Saunders’ time at Villa. McGrath can claim some of the other Villa shirts.

Saunders signing went a long way of giving Villa the quality up front to threaten winning the title. Dalian Atkinson would have also been a consideration, but his ‘sick note’ status, that contributed to Villa fading away at the end of the season, leaves him short.

Deano was a player that had been top of the MOMS shopping list when he was at Derby, so it was great to see him in a Villa shirt, albeit after he stopped off for a season at Liverpool first.

Best Result in the Shirt

You’d probably go with a game that Dean Saunders shined in, the 4-2 over Liverpool win at Villa Park. A game infamous for that Ronny Rosenthal miss and Liverpool’s dubious green away kit.
