Aston Villa Insights Beyond Poundland Preseason Cliches

Walsall vs Aston Villa Insights

The initial insights into Steven Gerrard’s first preseason with Aston Villa were gained at the Poundland Bescot stadium in a 4-0 win over Walsall, ahead of Villa’s trip to Australia to take on Leeds United, Brisbane Roar and Manchester United.

While some of Villa’s international contingent had already departed for Australia, it still provided the chance to get a first look at new signing Diego Carlos and catch-up on the progress of some of Villa’s youngsters.

On a bonus My Old Man Said podcast episode, we look beyond the ‘getting minutes in the bank’ and ‘it’s all about improving fitness’ cliches, as we see what we can already spot in Villa’s preparations for the 2022/23 season over the cause of their first preseason 90 minutes.

Obviously, it’s early to get too much indication of what’s going to happen, especially with the key players that went to Australia in advance, but key partnerships on the pitch were already apparent and how dynamic full-backs are integral to how Steven Gerrard wants to play.

We also discuss any recent happenings off the pitch, like the signing of Ludwig Augustinsson.
