Aston Villa Make Striker Loan Deal in Last Attempt to Save Face

Aston Villa Make Wesley Exodus Plan

While Aston Villa fans demand the next new signing, the club have to do other kinds of business in the transfer window, namely damage limitation.

Making the best of a bad situation certainly springs to mind when it comes to Wesley Moraes and the £22m it cost to bring him to Villa. Wesley is very much an unfortunate cautionary tale, when it comes to the rabid hype machine that blindly greets new signings fuelled by hopium and YouTube video clips.

Judging by social media commentary on Villa’s current preseason tour, seeing a new signing for 15 minutes in a friendly, seems to be enough for some hot takers to deem them the second coming.

After the fanfare of being Villa’s recording signing, Wesley struggled to get any real momentum going and then just when he was showing some semblance of promise, a serious injury ended his Premier League dream with Villa. He was sidelined between 1 January 2020 and 26 March 2021, suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in a game against Burnley, he had earlier scored in.

Wesley’s Villa Contract

After a lacklustre loan to his previous club Brugges, the Brazilian striker had recently been on an unsuccessful year-long loan in Brazil at Internacional, in an odd time period that cut across two seasons. It wasn’t the greatest deal in terms of English football seasons, as he’d potentially return to Villa with a few months to play, before entering the final year of his contract, which expires on June 30, 2024.

Now though, that deal has cancelled with Wesley today confirming a move to Spanish tier-two outfit Levante on a season-long loan. It’s reported there is an option to make the move permanent, but a permanent fee hasn’t been disclosed at this juncture, although it’s expected to be a token gesture one.

It’s a move that seems to have suited all three parties – Wesley, Villa and Internacional.

Villa will obviously be paying a sizeable chunk of his wages at Levante, as they look to draw the line under what has been unfortunate signing from a business point of view.

Still only 25-years-old, hopefully Wesley can turn his career around in Spain, as he’ll no doubt have the aim of getting back into the Brazilian national squad.
