Aston Villa Receive Further Evidence of Unpredictable Premier League Season

After four-straight Premier League wins, Aston Villa have now suffered back-to-back Villa Park losses. It’s seemingly just the sign of the times though, when it comes to what is fast becoming a bizarre Premier League season. Manchester United hover above the relegation zone without a home win, while their city neighbours are mid-table and have conceded five goals in one game. At the top of the league is the team Villa beat 7-2 this season in what The Guardian labelled an ‘Acid Trip’ of a result.

The season so far has been as unpredictable as mobile slot machines with many an ACCA going up in smoke on results that would have normally been bankers. So far, the behind-closed-doors nature of the games has seemingly had an effect on matters. Currently there are only two unbeaten home teams (Liverpool and Everton) compared to seven unbeaten teams on their travels (including Villa). It typically would be the other way round.

The 4-3 scoreline of Villa’s defeat to Southampton certainly flattered Dean Smith’s men, with the game done and dusted at 4-0 before the hour mark was even up. Once again, as in their previous game against Leeds, Villa’s midfield offered little in resistance against a clinical Saints team.

Is there a problem with Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley seemingly playing freely, or should Smith give them more stricter roles? Would a more disciplined midfield help John McGinn, who was anonymous in the first half and at times during the Leeds game?

The midfield of Barkley, Grealish, Luiz and McGinn sounds great on paper, but it has been a mixed bag, so far. Is it just a case of getting a few games under their belts together?

On the latest My Old Man Said podcast (episode 120) we autopsy the Southampton game and look at Villa’s midfield issues, as well as discussing the recent Villa Fan Consultation Group meeting with Villa CEO Christian Purslow and the current PPV TV debate.
