Something for the Weekend – Hammers
Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings’ 100th game for Aston Villa sees the club looking to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat this season, as they languish in the lower tier of the Premier League. The tough test against West Ham, who currently sit fourth in the Premier League, kicks-off the pivotal period of four games, Villa need to take points from, before a very tough December period of seven games.
Failure to pick-up up a decent haul of points between now and the end of November will see the first legit pressure on Villa Head Coach Dean Smith, who has only nine wins in the previous 28 games.
There has been teething troubles in terms of not having fully fit key personnel to chose from after the upheaval of replacing the departing Jack Grealish. The three players – Buendia, Ings and Bailey – brought in to replace the former Villa captain ‘in the aggregate’, still haven’t all started a game together. Indeed, Leon Bailey has failed to start any league game so far this season.
If Villa had closed out the last 10 minutes of the Wolves game having been 2-0 up, they would currently boast the third best home record in the Premier League, while four of their five away games have been against the Super League six.
So, Smith has reasonable mitigating circumstances for Villa’s average start to the season, but improvement is needed asap.
