Aston Villa Slated to Play ‘Ghost Game’ Friendly at Villa Park Before First Fixtures

As MOMS predicted earlier in the week, Aston Villa will play a friendly at Villa Park before the restart of the Premier League.

The behind-closed-doors friendly will be against West Bromwich Albion this Saturday, a game that as well as lifting the team’s fitness levels will also test the stadium’s new biosecurity setup in light of the Covid-19 virus.

The match is to be reported to be more of a competitive training exercise with the Baggies understood to be bringing two teams worth of players, to potentially play two one-hour games at Villa Park.

With the usual local lower league teams that normally play preseason friendlies against Villa, now in their close seasons, a Championship opponent was always the most likely.

Slaven Bilic’s Albion are second from top in the Championship and will be looking to kickstart their own restart on the front foot in a bid to gain the promotion that eluded them last season, when Villa beat them in the Play-off semi-finals.

The West Midland’s match-up comes 11 days before Villa restart their season with a brace of games at Villa Park in swift succession.

Villa’s opening clash against Sheffield United at 6pm on Wednesday June 17th, will then be followed by Chelsea’s visit on the following Sunday at 4.15pm. Both games will be live on Sky.

  1. yup. Must win. If cases don’t drop then the season will end- gotta be out of bottom 3. If season does go through- we will need to win the first 4 matches! UTV.

  2. Anything that helps us to hit the ground running which is what has to happen against Sheffield United is ok by me. My opinion is we have to win that game at all costs to get out of the bottom 3 because I can’t see the league being completed this season. So forget the negativity it’s 11 v 11 let’s take it to them from the get go 3 points is critical for our survival hopes.
