Endless Aston Villa Striker Transfer Links

The transfer rumour mill seems to have striker links to Aston Villa coming out of every orifice, and there’s no prizes for guessing which end they’re mainly coming out of. Now, if Villa were going to get a striker in this tranfer window it was a short-term replacement for the injured Libor Kozák, who himself was a Benteke back-up plan. Paul Lambert plumped for his old charger Grant Holt and that was that. Well, not unless you’re a desperado newspaper/website with content to create. Some of the below suggestions are remarkably tenuous at best.

Remember Nahki Wells from Bradford? What was the logic there? That he once played against Villa last season in the League Cup semi-final? Do these ‘journalists’ actually know their football? If he was such a hot property primed for a Premiership future, don’t you think somebody would have snagged him in the summer? The fact Wells ended up this window at Huddersfield on a four-and-a-half year deal, tells you all you need to know about whether he was ever good enough to come to Villa.

Gael Kakuta – Chelsea

This is a player that Chelsea have been struggling to work out what to do with for several years. Nevermind not making the grade at Chelsea, he’s also failed to impress at Bolton and Fulham, while on loan. Since then, he’s had a loan spell in France with  Dijon and in Holland with Vitesse. If you wanted to  play Kakuta wide, you have to answer the question – is he better in terms of plying in the Premiership at the moment than Marc Albrighton or Bertand (when employed as a winger)? Kakuta could only come to Villa if it was a long-term deal, since the club have already loaned Ryan Bertand from Chelsea and reached their domestic loan limit.

Jean Marie Dongou – Barcelona

The rumour mill have suggested Villa are in for the 18-year-old Cameroon striker on a loan until the end of the season. Who invented this story? Considering that Lambert has put Villa’s own 18-year-old prospects on loan in order to man-up, why would he bring in another raw youngster at this time of the season? Dongou has only made a single appearance for the Barcelona first team proper. To come in, Dongou would have to be able to hit the ground running to make any impact or sense.  Barcelona have a a ‘B’ team too, which Dongou plays regularly in, which at this stage is better for the youngster to learn his trade. All this waffle about Villa trying to build a relationship with Barca is hardly something you start in a January window. Makes no sense at all.

Jelle Vossen – Genk

We’re going to deal with this one properly in Media Muppets, because the one particular report we’ve read deals in particular buffoon-like logic.  Vossen is a player Villa were rumoured to be after over three years ago when Gérard Houllier was the Villa boss. Since, because he happens to play for Benteke’s old club Genk, rumours linking to him to Villa have been rehashed ever since Benteke joined Villa. From being Benteke’s potential partner to his replacement. I doubt we’ll ever see Vossen in a claret and blue jersey, never mind in this transfer window.

Leigh Griffiths – Wolves

Hahaha. Enough already!

If the press are going to make up Aston Villa transfer rumours, at least make them about attacking midfielders! The position that Lambert is actually actively pursuing. UTV

  1. Jamie Sanderson of the Metro has got a lot to answer for this week. The hairstyle is questionable, but the transfer links are even more bizarre!

  2. there is no “domestic loan limit” – its a global limit of four per season. We have reached our Chelsea limit for this season.
