Aston Villa Switch Midfield Target in Surprise Deadline Day Move

In the past couple of days Aston Villa supporters had been led to believe that Dean Smith and co were looking to strengthen the Villa midfield, with both Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah and Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden seemingly the main concerns.

With deadline day drawing to a close, several national and local press have ventured that Swansea City’s Leroy Fer is having a medical at Bodymoor Heath with a view to signing permanently for Villa.

Fer had been slated to move this week with reports linking him to either Lille or Fenerbahce.

With Fer’s contract up at the end of the season, the Swans are desperate to get his wages off the books now, as they face a further season of transition in the Championship.

Villa will potentially be able to pay lower than his current Swansea wages, with an extended contract being the draw for the Dutch midfielder.

It’s thought that the player himself prefers a move to Villa than going abroad.

Fey has impressed for Swansea in recent encounters against Villa, and while not exactly a marque signing, will provide Villa with a bit more strength in the midfield and be a useful player this season (and any additional seasons in the Championship).

With his Premier League experience for Swansea, Norwich and QPR, Fey will also be a useful squad player next season, if Villa are indeed granted the miracle of promotion this season.

Meanwhile, ex-Villa loanee Yannick Bolasie is potentially heading out on loan to Anderlecht, with the player now in Belgium heading for a medical.

Update as promised – Fer off! Carroll in.

Leroy Fer – ended up as a no deal. According to a Guardian journalist, it seems that Leicester City’s Andy King was lined up as Fey’s replacement by the Swans, but when he went to Derby, it put a spanner in the works.

Midfielder Tom Carroll was joined Villa from Swansea City though.

  1. I think so, it’s the same old same old Villa, leave everything as late as possible then panic buy what’s left.
