Aston Villa Trio Make Provisional England Euros Squad – Can They Make the Cut?

Villa Trio in Provisional England Squad

Aston Villa trio Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins have all been named in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2020.

Mings (eight caps), Grealish (five caps) and Watkins (one cap) would have no doubt benefited from Villa double win against Spurs and Chelsea in front of England boss Gareth Southgate, and the trio now have a week to impress Southgate, before he trims his squad down next Tuesday.

Asked why he named 33 players today rather than 30, or his final 26, Southgate replied in today’s squad announcement press conference.

“I think our situation is more complicated than any other country. Of this 33, I think 12 are going to play in the Europa League and Champions League finals.

“We felt more time would allow us to make better decisions.”

“Our preference was to name the 26, but we have not got an ideal hand of cards – a lot of unknowns. Information and evidence are very important and we will have a lot more in the next seven days.”

Making the Cut

Mings and Grealish are certainly expected to make the final 26, while Watkins will be hoping he offers England something a bit different with his pressing to get the nod. The fact England play with one central striker certainly gives him a chance.

Just a reminder that Gareth Southgate will have to whittle his 33-man squad down to 26 next Tuesday, a day before England play their first warm-up game against Austria (20:00).

After the final selection of the 26-man squad is made next week, the Three Lions then play their first warm-up game against Austria on Wednesday (20:00), followed by a match against Romania (6 June, 17:00), with both games taking playing at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

Then a week later, England begin their Euro 2020 campaign with their Group D fixture against Croatia on 13 June (14:00), before matches against John McGinn’s Scotland on 18 June (20:00) and the Czech Republic on 22 June (20:00) – all at Wembley.
