Can Aston Villa Gain Automatic Promotion? What Supporters Think Poll

If you want a good example of a heart vs head decision, then look no further than the question of whether Aston Villa can finish the season gaining an automatic promotion place.

Four points off the pace with 12 games to go, the quest to finish at least second is not quite in Villa’s hands, as even if they beat the current second place team, Cardiff City, at Villa Park, they still need them to drop points.

Of course, it’s unlikely that both teams will breeze through their remaining fixtures, without experiencing some hiccups along the way.

Both teams have to play the league leaders, Wolves, whom themselves haven’t won in their last three games and have seen their lead cut from double figures to just six points.

Then also there’s the charge of the 2018 Championship form team, Fulham, who may still have something to say about who goes up, having beaten both Villa and Wolves recently.

And lets not forget Derby County, who won’t be finished just yet.

So how do you feel about how this season will end for Villa? Will it be automatic promotion or play-offs?

Heart vs Head

One train of thought in the comments is supporters saying, ‘Heart says automatic, while head says play-offs’. Is that Villans just fearing the worst and not wanting to tempt fate?

In MOMS opinion, I think it would take Villa and Cardiff beating Wolves in the run-in to even begin to start to think that Wolves automatic promotion place might slip. But, in light of that, you have to quietly confident that Villa can grab that second spot, especially with Jack Grealish and Albert Adomah returning to the fray soon.

Cardiff City actually lost four games on the trot over the Christmas period, which demonstrates a fragility. So, it’ll be interesting to see if they can keep their nerve when the pressure increases in the final weeks.

Villa’s 2018 form has been solid and while they have already briefly been in second spot, they had a lot of ground to make-up to get there. Their only loss of 2018 was losing away against Fulham, the hottest form team in the division, while missing two key attacking players in Grealish and Adomah. No shame in that.

Despite being four points off the automatic places, I would guess that due to our 2018 form and squad depth, the other teams in the automatic promotion race are perhaps more concerned about us, than we are about them, at this moment in time.

One big advantage of promotion via automatic over play-offs
