Can Christian Benteke pass the 20-goal Mark? The Recent Villa 20 Goal Scorers

One of the equations that will be linked to Aston Villa’s Premiership survival this season will be whether Christian Benteke can surpass the 20-goal for the season mark. If he does, Villa’s survival should be directly linked.

As we can see from the above diagram created by Slovenia Lions Club, 20-goal Villa heroes are normally linked to successful seasons for the club. Withe and Shaw both surpassed the 20-mark when we won the league back in 1981. Platt bagged over 20 when we finished runners-up to Liverpool in the league. Dwight Yorke scored his first 20+haul when Villa won the League Cup and finished 4th.

Benteke’s potential haul will be at odds with the team’s overall success though. It’s won’t be the first time in recent history though…

Simon Stainrod…21 goals in a season? I don’t actually remember that happening in 1985/86 season, but then again, I’ve blocked out my childhood memories of Graham Turner’s reign as Villa boss. When you recall Stainrod scored 9 goals in the League Cup run to the ill-fated semi-final against Oxford United – including a total of five goals in the two 2nd leg rounds vs Exeter – then it makes sense.

Can Benteke reach the 20 mark ? He’s scored almost 50% of Villa goals this season, so I don’t see why not. A hat-trick vs QPR would be a great start to achieving it. UTV
