Current Aston Villa Limitations Exposed and Possible Solutions

Not for the first time this season, Aston Villa’s midfield was overrun against Brighton last weekend at the Amex Stadium, as the home team’s midfield press frustrated and neutralised a Villa team that eventually was lucky to escape with a point. Emilio Martínez and his back four certainly spared their team’s blushes, as they only registered a single shot on target at the other end.

The 0-0 draw at the Amex Stadium wasn’t the first time we’ve seen Villa struggle against a high energy midfield. Is Dean Smith’s perceived first XI up to the job against such teams? Or does he need to make adjustments? In the latest My Old Man Said podcast we look at the Villa midfield situation and the mix of midfield personnel that might be able to provide solutions.

Also in the show, there’s talk of compromised football owner zoom calls, bizarre reasons to postpone football games, the retirement of Ron Vlaar, and Jacob Ramsey’s new contract.

Overated or underrated features ex-Villa and Brighton midfielder Steve Sidwell.

Enjoy!
