Dean Smith’s Winter Break Calm Before Wembley & Survival Storm

Winter Break Calm Before Wembley & Survival Storm

The winter break came at a good time for Aston Villa. With a cup final date at Wembley secured, it provided the team with a chance to refocus on the league campaign, after a disappointing defeat at Bournemouth.

Villa’s Head Coach Dean Smith has certainly felt it was a positive two-week period for his players.

“Since the Bournemouth game we’ve had a winter break – the first time we’ve seen that in England. I’ve certainly seen a positive side of it,” reflected Smith, this week.

“I think my players and my staff all needed that break and they all got five or six days off.

Some of those who were coming back from injury had their own individual work to maintain their fitness, but it was a nice chance to give everyone time to clear their heads.”

It’s not only Premier League players that can have a winter break…the My Old Man Said podcast returns to catch up on the latest happenings in the Villa-verse in episode 98, as Villa prepare themselves for an end of season relegation battle via a trip to Wembley for the League Cup final.

As well as looking back at Villa’s cup semi-final win against Leicester City and the trip to Bournemouth that followed, we cast an eye on Villa’s chances against Manchester City in the Wembley showcase, the ‘Jack Grealish to Manchester United’ rumours, Villa’s new striking options, a possible rail seating trial at Old Trafford, Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho’s football link and… trench foot.

  1. As they say the proof of the pudding, we will see after today’s game how much good the winter break did. Personally I’m not interested in the cup game I believe we should be fully focussed on our league position.
