Episode 13 – Ron Atkinson Interview and Villa Park Comforts

My Old Man Said Aston Villa Podcast – Episode 13

Jack Grealish’s late strike against Wigan secured Villa’s fourth straight home win on a day that My Old Man Said sat down with ex-Villa boss Ron Atkinson to discuss the current Villa situation and his time at Villa. Amongst which, there was football anecdotes aplenty, including ones on Brian Clough, Paul McGrath, Andy Gray, David Hirst and Doug Ellis.

Certainly the “Big Fat Ron’s Claret and Blue Army” era was one of MOMS favourite times following Villa. A period of some great attacking football with a team full of character.

While we chatted for 45 minutes or so, we could have gone on for much, much longer with Atkinson’s memory and wit razor sharp.

Before pressing the record button, we chatted about his popularity in Ireland, where he’d been in the week doing a signing, Bryan Cranston’s (of Breaking Bad fame) performance in Trumbo, a film Ron enjoyed, and also his plan to turn Steve Froggatt (who got MOMS the odd Villa ticket back in the day) into the England national team’s left-back, before injury put paid to it.

Big Ron is currently promoting his latest biography Ron Atkinson: The Manager , which we’ve already run a couple of posts on, discussing topics like Ron’s favourite Villa games as the boss and also trying to nab Paul McGrath for Sheffield Wednesday before he signed for Villa.

Thanks to Ron for his time and you can listen to the interview below. Enjoy!
