Have Aston Villa Already Done Their Main Business in the Transfer Window?

Aston Villa Ahead of Schedule in Summer Transfer Window

Aston Villa were already four signings up before the summer transfer window officially opened last week. With the formalities sorted out for Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos and Robin Olsen, Villa boss Steven Gerrard had already jetted off for a family holiday. While he floated on a sun lounger in the pool, the Villa Twitterati masses fed on their daily clickbait, but are there actually many more first XI calibre transfers to come?

There’s certainly been a lot of red herrings already like West Ham’s interest in Ollie Watkins and Tyronne Mings and also the idea of Danny Ings already going. I doubt Villa are in the business of strengthening their Premier League rivals.

As MOMS mentioned in the Cameron Archer article, both Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings are near the top of the tree when it comes to English Premier League striking talent. Ings is a recognised finisher, while Watkins is a one-man striking press like no other. To upgrade either, you are talking serious money and entering the realms of talent that would prefer Champions League football at this stage of their career.

Last season, both Watkins and Ings suffered for momentum from injuries, with Villa’s troubled pre-season and a change of manager, not exactly helping. It’s hard to think that once the Villa midfield is finally sorted out, both won’t have an improved season in 2022/23.

Archer is also a great prospect to be blooded in as an impact striker too.

If there is any other business to be done upfront, then Villa will probably looking for a different sort of striking option. There’s also the future of Keinan Davis to be considered too, who benefited from his spell at Nottingham Forest. There’s question marks over whether he’ll be good enough for where Villa want to go, but Gerrard may take a closer look in preseason, as Davis does give you something different.

Both Coutinho and Olsen’s signings are something of a continuation from last season, so in the latest two-part My Old Man Said podcast show, we focus on the dynamic of both the Kamara and Carlos signings, as well as looking at the summer transfer window so far.

How did Villa actually attract such players and what kind of message does it send?

As well as breaking down Gerrard’s transfer window so far, we catch up with the latest Villa news, Media Muppets and Three Points.

Enjoy!
