How Aston Villa were Reborn After Baptising Liverpool

Villa Deja Vu

November 5th 1989. In front of ITV’s television cameras at Villa Park, Graham Taylor’s Aston Villa team, that had narrowly escaped relegation the previous season in their first season back in the top tier, stuck six goals past Neville Southall, as they beat Everton 6-2. The Merseysiders had made a decent start to the season, but were soon left shell shocked, as Villa made a big statement that this season would be different.

With the imperious Paul McGrath marshalling the backline, the majestic Gordon Cowans pulling the midfield strings, and a free-scoring David Platt inspiring them, Villa suddenly had a team full of possibilities. An unlikely title race ensued with Liverpool, with Villa eventually finishing runner’s-up, but after years of decay since they lifted the European Cup, Villa supporters were going into the next decade with their team well and truly back.

MOMS couldn’t help feel that Villa’s recent 7-2 drubbing of the red half of Merseyside provided a similiar watershed moment, after recent troubled times. Days before the Liverpool game, MOMS had written that it felt Villa were on the cusp of something and Villans just needed some on-the-pitch evidence of it.

Well, it didn’t take long, and it was delivered first class with a bow on it. Seven f**king two!

In the latest My Old Man Said podcast we give our first impressions on the game, after a unmissable intro to the show from a Liverpool point of view.

Episode 7-2 Notes

7-2. Aston Villa dismantled Liverpool in spectacular fashion at Villa Park on Sunday night. This is MOMS podcast’s first impressions of a result that shocked the football world.

This was a Liverpool team that have been crowned League Champions, European Champions and World Club Champions in the last couple of seasons. While the result is unlikely to have much affect on Liverpool’s fortunes this season, it’s a huge clue to how Villa could progress this term.

With the team’s attacking threat newly charged by the arrival of Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley, who both have helped Jack Grealish to finally go through the gears at Villa, anything is possible. With Emiliano Martinez and Matty Cash strengthening further a better organised defence, the signs are positive for Dean Smith’s men, who are now seven games unbeaten in the Premier League and 100% this season.

Before we get ahead of ourselves though, let’s reflect on an incredible game of football.

  1. Totally agree with the comments made, let’s enjoy the moment in a humble fashion, has Colin said no more trolling Liverpool who were not at their best but take nothing away from our boys who were superb on the night and fully deserve all the credit for their performance. It is a long hard season with the added International breaks putting even more pressure on weary bodies, we now have around 10 players on international duty and a couple of injuries to key players can soon ruin a season as we know only to well from last season’s situation. So stay grounded hope for an injury free international break and show the same fervour in our next game against Leicester which will be no walk over.UTV

  2. time to stop as colin suggests. The cliche one swallow does not make a summer applies – its a cliche because it is true. When we have beaten all the top six will be the time to think about top half of the table. Which is all I expect this season

  3. Good article but we need to keep our feet on the ground, it doesn’t mean that we are going to win the league as some people have said, and I also think it’s time to stop trolling Liverpool we beat them well just leave it at that
I see the crazy journos have started again it was Grealish to Man U again yesterday and the Raschica saga starts again makes you sick to death of hearing them spouting fake news all the time,
We should all be proud of what we have achieved and so far so good, but don’t get carried away.well not yet anyway.
