Aston Villa Form Concerns
One glance at the statistics for Aston Villa’s recent trip to West Ham begs the question of how on earth did they fail to win the game and walk away from the London Stadium with no points? 16 shots to 6, 66% of possession, a penalty, a controversial disallowed goal. Simply put, it would have been easier to win the game.
Ditto their previous game against Brighton at Villa Park. 15 shots to 7, 12 corners to 3, and VAR changing the ref’s mind on a late penalty.
Despite such attacking domination, Villa have failed to put these games to bed, through a mixture of sloppiness at both ends and bad luck. The headline fact though is it’s now four losses out of their last five for Dean Smith’s men.
With Villa’s clash with Newcastle now called off due to COVID-19, Dean Smith now has plenty of time to think about what has been going wrong in recent weeks, from careless defending to poor finishing. The fundamentals of defensive organisation and fluid attacking are there, but careless moments are costing them big points and progress in the table.
In the latest My Old Man Said podcast we look at the factors that have perhaps held Villa back from fulfilling their potential in recent games, based on some of the excellence previously demonstrated this season.
The show looks at the main issues – from the zonal marking to an under par John McGinn, from Trezequet’s misfiring to a lack of genuine options for attacking change in-game.
We also look at ‘that’ VAR decision and provide insights to the recent Villa Fan Consultation Meeting that discussed the return of fans back to Villa Park.

Very good article, and yes we have lost our way McGinn not firing, our defence woeful against WH Trezeguet full of running but couldn’t hit a barn door, for me Traore a much better option, if you really want to be critical Ollie Watkins, whilst unlucky with VAR missed a penalty and a good chance in front of goal. So on the basis that Davis also has a good engine but can’t score, and we have no idea what we can expect from Wesley when he’s back fit, I would say that we need a quality striker, and I also believe Buendia from Norwich would be a good signing for us, a bit of cover for Mc Ginn. It’s disappointing to see our great start slipping away, and it now critical that we get back to winning ways.
