#65 How Does Just One Player Transform How Aston Villa Play?

Aston Villa’s One Man Band?

It seemed to be a myth that Jack Grealish‘s three-month absence from injury had been the sole reason Villa’s season had derailed…Villa’s 4-0 win versus Derby County, suggested it wasn’t.

In the latest My Old Man Said podcast show we examine how Jack Grealish makes Aston Villa tick, not only in terms of his individual talent, but in terms of allowing Villa’s other midfielders to up their game.

Is he more the claret and blue glue and final piece of the jigsaw for the team or is he simply Aston Villa’s one man band?

In the podcast episode we also look at whether Grealish can pull Villa’s play-off hopes out of the fire. He’ll certainly need to inspired a win at St. Andrew’s to kick-start the transition.

Episode 65 Notes

The Super Jack Grealish Show (and statue)

He’s back. Thank f**k for that! The My Old Man Said team of David, Dan and Chris are thankful they can start discussing proper winning football again, as the return of Jack ‘Captain’ Grealish inspired a 4-0 win over Derby County.

As well as talk and praise of Grealish (and his buddies Conor Hourihane and Glen Whelan) and the selection problems ahead of the Second City derby, there’s talk of all kind of happenings from around Villa Park – from toxicity to tampons, from Villa dogs to play-off realism.

Outside the VillaVerse, we discuss everything from clubs run by fans on apps to money-back Russian result guarantees and Spain’s move to kill off Monday night football.

We were so giddy Villa were 4-0 up at half-time, there’s more swearing than normal in the show, so please be warned.

Enjoy.

  1. I agree with Jinksy, the lad has great football intelligence, to go with his undoubted ability. The effect on the rest of the team cannot be understated either, everyone seems to lift their game a little when he is playing, I think belief has quite a bit to do with it and the massive lack of when he is not there.
Without him and the creativity he brings we are a very ordinary looking Championship team in my opinion. Asides Jack & JM, our best players IMO are loanees.
I was hoping young Calum would be ready to fill his boots (should he move on this summer), but that may be a little soon for the lad.
It is gonna be a mad few months for our football club, there are so many things to be resolved, whether we go up or not.
Sorry to go off thread a bit.

  2. Simple. He gives other players someone to pass to. Other players don’t understand that. Yes he has huge ability but like Cowans did he is always moving and available to pass to. He finds space. This is such a simple talent. I wish other players would do the same.

    • The othe huge impact is Ming the merciless. What a player. Be worth getting promoted just to keep this bloke. Big strong skill full great positioning. Only time he gives the ball away is a long pass into the opponents half. But other ayers take note. Like Jack he is passionate about the team he plays for and he’s only on loan. If the others had half of that quality we would be challenging for top 2 not mid table. Best centre half for many many years. Break bank to keep this guy
