Insight into Villa’s Transfer Window Ambition and Planning

Transfer Deadline Day Dilemmas

With Aston Villa inactive over the past FA Cup weekend due to their earlier unceremonious defeat against Stevenage, judging by Villa social media and the various transfer rumours, an idle mind is the devil’s playground. Despite the marketed hype of Transfer Deadline Day, it was always likely that Villa fans would be watching Twitter tumbleweed across the day.

Bertrand Traoré returning from Istanbul Basaksehir FK, to firstly, complete his rehabilitation programme following injury and then help give Unai Emery a wide option off the bench, was a clear indication that Villa weren’t going to splash the cash on a wide option this window.

While many supporters are always desperate for new signings, the January market rarely offers sensible value and Villa despite a managerial change are sticking to their seasonal plan. MOMS had an audience with Villa CEO Christian Purslow last week, as part of a Fan Consultation Group meeting, and got an indication that there would be no knee-jerk clamour for signings, just because the club were currently three points off the European places.

There’s a bigger picture to consider.

Firstly, Villa now have a decent team, so new players need to be upgrades and those don’t come cheap. Emery took the Villa job, partly because he was happy with the talent that Villa already had (who will now hopefully perform under a decent manager). He will use the more rational summer window to build on a decent foundation of players.

Have Villa currently got a good enough squad for a top-half Premier League finish? Yes. Is it good enough to snatch a European place? Well, that maybe the frustration of this window, but let’s not forget, Chelsea and Liverpool will probably wake up from their slumber, so they will certainly be favourites to finish ahead of Villa in the final shake-up. So, rash spending maybe fool’s gold.

In the latest My Old Man Said podcast, MOMS looks at the transfer picture and grand plan, informed by the recent meeting with the club and what was picked up from speaking to the club’s CEO and co.

Also, there’s the usual good stuff of the latest Villa news, Media Muppets, Three Points and Emery’s Clipboard.
