Is it Too Late for Automatic Promotion? Behind Enemy Lines and Villa Handball Issues

Aston Villa are now on an impressive seven-games unbeaten run, yet they’ve actually lost ground on the automatic places during that period. My Old Man Said’s David Michael, Dan Rodgers and Chris Budd take a look back at recent events in the Villaverse and look at the team’s automatic promotion chances.

Also, they look back on the injustice of the Baggies handball-winning point, with Dan returning from going deep undercover in the home end at the Hawthorns. We focus on Anwar El Ghazi and Orjan Nyland, and conclude whether the Baggies game should have been wrapped up before the handball farce.

There’s news from the latest Villa Fan Consultation Group (FCG) meeting (yes, there’s been another one) and there’s also talk about VAR, Liverpool’s Premier League title credentials and a history lesson to learn from the Copa Libertadores final.

Also, there’s the latest ‘Where Were You, When We Were Good?’ which takes a trip back to Christmas time 1995, when Savo Milosevic finally turned into Santa and started to gift goals to Villa Park.

  1. Automatic. No chance! We have averaged 1.8 points a game under Dean Smith. We need to improve that by over 50% i.e. 2.5 a game to get to 90 + points as Cardiff did. 58 points required from 24 games. So let’s focus on playoffs. We still need 50 points to better last year’s total of 83. But Smith’s form should get us into the playoffs. More importantly he won’t play a centre half wonderful in the air crap on floor against a team that never plays it in the air and might even attack against 10 men! I fancy us more for promotion this season than in the play off final last year and our ability to stay there. We are in good hands. I’ll be there at the next 6 games home and away. Come on the Villa.
