Will Johnny Evans WBA Transfer Trigger Defensive Moves at Villa?

Another Centre-back?

It’s been rumoured for a couple of weeks now that Tim Sherwood was interested in the services of WBA defender Joleon Lescott. Any move for the childhood Villa fan was always going to be dependent on the Baggies signing another centre-back first though.

The news today that West Brom have had a bid of £6m + add-ons accepted for the Manchester United centre-back Johnny Evans seems now to pave the way for Lescott to join Villa.

Lescott was once rumoured to be on Martin O’Neill’s short-list of replacements for Martin Laursen a few years ago. He’ll potentially come a bit cheaper this time though.

Rumours of a £2.5m transfer fee seem wide of the mark for a defender who is 33 and would looking for a two-year deal. A fee somewhere between £1m and £2m is more realistic, if the deal takes place.

What about Phil?

But do Villa really need him? That question perhaps needs the answer to what is happening to Philippe Senderos, first. The Swiss intentional seems to have disappeared from B6, but there’s been little talk of him finding a new club.

At 30, Senderos obviously has some years on Lescott, but clearly Sherwood doesn’t have any plans for the Swiss international in Villa’s future.

With Michah Richards, Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker also in the centre-back ranks, Villa do have depth in the position, so having a sixth centre-back would be pointless. So essentially, it’ll come down to Senderos or Lescott.

If you had to choose between the two, you’d probably side with Lescott due to him being more of a threat in the opposition’s box on set plays and also the sentimental angle of him finishing his career at the club he supported as a kid.

If on, Lescott to Villa might be as exciting as the final days of the transfer window get for Villa though.

  1. I hope he comes Senderos will not play. Baker needs to be loaned to get game time. Lescott would bring much to the dressing room
