90: Lessons Learnt for Dean Smith From Liverpool’s Great Villa Park Escape

You could tell by the applause from the Villa faithful that remained at Villa Park, after Liverpool have scored two late goals to extinguish what was looking like an unlikely Villa win, that they saw promise in their team’s performance.

Yes, Villa have now surrendered 11 points from winning positions, the highest tally in the Premier League. But, it’s not a clear picture. This includes Villa being ahead and very much in games against the likes of Spurs and Arsenal, as well as Liverpool. While, perhaps lapses in concentration may have contributed to their downfall, so has the quality of the opponent, that Villa have ultimately proved they can already compete against.

Against Liverpool, Smith will have clearly seen the deficiencies of his squad, from not having striker options to call upon to unsettle Liverpool to the lack of options off the bench to help close the game out.

On the other hand, he would have seen Trezeguet step up both the attacking and defending sides to his game. Anwar El Ghazi too, showed an improvement in his tracking back.

The Villa Head Coach will also now know that Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz are technically sound and cool headed enough to play under pressure against the very best.

In the latest My Old Man Said podcast we look at these and many other points of consideration that came out of the visit of Liverpool.

Yes, the result was a tough pill to swallow, but the performance could potentially give the team more hope this season than how they performed beating Norwich City 5-1.

Lessons Learnt From Liverpool’s Great Villa Park Escape

While Jurgen Klopp’s boys last minute antics at Villa Park were cruel, the 2-1 loss against Liverpool, ultimately proved to be a good bench mark performance in terms of where Aston Villa currently are under Dean Smith.

As well as discussing the good, bad and the ugly of Liverpool’s visit to Villa Park, we also look at Liverpool’s legal wranglings, facial recognition in football, and Southampton’s attempt at compensation.

There’s also the Scott Hogan Touch Count Meter Challenge and lots, lots more.

  1. Ok several players raised their game against Liverpool, but we cannot continue to pat each other on the back and be happy with losing, we really should have beaten Liverpool even though they are the better side. Those same players who upped their game must show the same response and resolve against starting on Saturday against Wolves and on a regular basis the great Villa fans deserve nothing less.UTV.
