Aston Villa Squad Numbers for 2022/23
Normally when it comes to the release of the Aston Villa squad numbers, you can occasionally gain a few insights into potential pecking orders in certain positions or what’s going through the managers mind about certain players.
There’s even the possibility of the club keeping a key number free in view of an incoming signing.
Of course, the significance of the tradition first XI numbers of 1 – 11 has sadly dissolved in modern football. It wasn’t too long ago in the 2018/19 season, when Villa began that season without a recognised number 9, which was bordering on sacrilege to football lore.
Then there’s the number 8 shirt, a once iconic number, traditionally the heart of the midfield, but recently the shirt has been possessed by players such as Henri Lansbury and Morgan Sanson.
The significant numbers that have been taken up are Diego Carlos, who takes up the number 3 (previously held by Matt Targett), despite his previous number 20 at Sevilla being currently free at Villa. Danny Ings grabs the number 9 shirt (formerly owned by Wesley) and will hopefully finally put some respect on the number.
Apart from that, the 1-11 numbers, are the same as last season.
Meanwhile, Boubacar Kamara is 44, Ludwig Augustinsson is 17 and Philippe Coutinho remains 23.
