Ollie Watkins, Covid Rumours and the Need to Deal With Villa’s Bogey Team

Brentford – Aston Villa’s Bogey Team

If you want a definition of a bogey team for Aston Villa, you don’t have to look much further than Dean Smith’s old club, Brentford. During Villa’s recent adventures in the Championship, Villa failed to beat the Bees in six encounters.

Giving them points almost felt like it was some kind of advance deal for Smith becoming Villa’s Head Coach.

Villa go into their first Premier League era encounter with Brentford with injuries to key personnel and rumours of a Covid outbreak that could mean other Villa players may miss the action.

Whether the social media rumours of the Covid cases (McGinn and Mings have been mooted) are true or not, Villa certainly could do with the likes of Leon Bailey, Bertrand Traore and Ollie Watkins to pull and play with the notable organisation of Brentford’s rearguard.

While the former two players are definitely out, in Smith’s press conference he hinted that there is a chance of Watkins being involved.

A win against Brentford would certainly set Villa up nicely for the international break, from which they’ll return a stronger team, as injuries clear up.

In the latest Something for the Weekend show of the MOMS podcast (see below to listen) we look at the Brentford game and the other key Villa issues that have risen in the last few days – from drawing Chelski in the cup to Wesley’s loan departure to Club Brugge.

  1. Why do we have so many injuries when hardly any football has been played, we have new arrivals who need more time to get up to speed, Davies is constantly injured and so on, Ashley Young shames them all, older than all of them but fitter and lucky for us has hit the ground running. What goes on in the medical before a player is signed?? Seems to me there is something not right in our preparation and fitness training, hats off to Young an experienced professional.
