One of the Favourites for the Aston Villa Job Rules Himself Out

One of the favourites amongst Aston Villa supporters for the Villa manager’s job has been Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, but he ruled himself out of contention in a post-match interview, after his team’s 6-0 win over St Johnstone.

“I’m the Celtic manager and I love it and have lots of challenges here,” Rodgers told BBC Scotland. “There is always speculation.”

Before wishing Villa well in diplomatic style.

“Villa is a top Premier League club in the Championship and I’m sure with their support base and resources they will try and get back there as quickly as they can.”

The BBC reported that Rodgers was on an alleged three-man shortlist for the job, that also includes both Thierry Henry and Rui Faria, Jose Mourinho’s long-time assistant across several clubs.

Rodgers had held favour with a section of Villa’s supporters judging by comments on MOMS social media.

Personally, I thought Rodgers would have retired from management after a Tim Sherwood managed Villa team beat his Liverpool team in the semi-final of the FA Cup in 2015.

Joking aside, his appeal to some was obvious. Rodgers took Swansea City to the Premier League via the play-offs and obviously had big club Premier League experience with Liverpool.

It’s hard to quantify his on-going success at Celtic, as it’s often believed any half-decent manager would win most things there. A case in point being Rodgers winning a domestic treble in his first season there.

Judging by his statement though, it seems that Rodgers still is motivated by improving Celtic’s fortunes in European competitions.

  1. Terry and Henry the dream team. Even if it doesn’t work out we will have a real exciting time. Welcome young guns.

  2. I see that one of our fans reckons that Martinez did a good job at Wigan, but if my memory serves me right he relegated them, I personally wouldn’t want to see him at Villa it would be a huge mistake, on the other hand it’s more than likely just journo talk, they are having a field day on Villa at the moment but as usual 99.99% is a load of rubbish.

  3. Dean Smith would still be my favourite but if not then taking a chance on Henry and Terry with Terry covering at CB until January would be uplifting playing attacking football built up from defence with one and two touch passing th a ball forward and remember the most difficult ball to defend against is the one pulled back from the touchline an attacker’s ball and defenders nightmare, but we must pressure higher up the pitch and not back up into our own penalty area, this has cost us dearly up to now.

  4. That was to be expected. Celtic is too good a job to give up for a Championship club. They would consider themselves capable of going deep into the Europa League, and he will be a legend if he can get the 10-in-a-row league wins (or as the Football Ramble called it, the Deep Fried Decima!)
