Something for the Weekend – Dogheads & Dean Smith’s England Job Prospects

Aston Villa vs Wolves 2021

It’s been a long four weeks since Aston Villa supporters made their way to Villa Park to see Dean Smith’s men. The long-awaited return sees the visit of Wolves in what could be a tricky clash for Villa. The visitors have won two out of their three away trips this season and have a solid recent record at Villa Park, only losing once in the last seven encounters.

Villa though are unbeaten in their past five Premier League home games – three wins, two draws, their best unbeaten home run in the top flight since an eight-game run in 2011.

In the latest Something for the Weekend podcast episode, we look at the spill out of the latest international break and the build-up to the Wolves game.

We catch up on Dean Smith’s pre-match press conference and the international duty race against time for Emi Martinez and Douglas Luiz to be involved against the Dogheads.

Also, what’s with this chatter about Dean Smith and the England job?

  1. I was going to explain my thinking, but i then realised that you are not referring to my post? …. OK, You just want Smithy out? …. Yeah, OK … [and please don’t mention Terry to me. The worst defensive record in the premiership lol]

  2. Not so. Dean is a decent guy but he is not premier league quality. Sorry but nice guys win nowt. He is half the manager he was without John Terry by his side.
The Wolves result was a classic example of his weakness. Two nil up, playing three at the back, in control and generally cruising with ten minutes to go. Dean decides to revert to five at the back and by doing so invites Wolves on. The rest his history, Poor disjointed thinking, not premier league required standard.

  3. Gutted! But Smithy will learn from this i’m sure. But is it just me wondering, why we have changed to a 5-3-2? ….. If that was the chosen plan for the new season, why didn’t we get back up players for this top heavy side? And loaning out Gilbert? …. It makes no sense to me whatsoever? … Anyway, Can’t stand the formation. Always prone down the wings to any clever team … [only my opinion but 4-1-4-1 or 4-4-1-1 would be a very good balance].

And another thing that as baffled me. Is it only me who thinks Mings is a very overrated player? I was saying this when we were two goals up. Did anyone see the amount of unnecessary corners he gave away? And he wasn’t even under pressure! …. His passing has the imagination of an house brick … God knows how he got into the England side? Basically a ‘one step forward, one step back’ player. The odd glimpse of genius. peppered with bad, very average play.

    We will get there, UTV!
