Spurs Defeat Showcases Aston Villa’s Current Deficiencies

Aston Villa 0 Spurs 4 – A Question of Finishing

It was a bizarre late afternoon at Villa Park, when Aston Villa played some of their best football under Steven Gerrard, peppering an inspired Hugo Lloris, only to end up losing the match 4-0. Son Heung-min’s hat-trick did most of the damage, as Villa’s team repeated the same short-comings that have been their downfall in recent months.

Villa had almost twice the amount of shots (11 to 6) as Spurs and three times the corners, as Spurs demonstrated the difference of being lethal in front of goal. If Villa had matched their visitors finishing in the first half, Gerrard’s men could have had the three points in the bag by the break.

Against Spurs North London rivals a couple of weeks ago, they can failed to create much of note. This was a different story, but with the same end.

Judging by his interviews and press conferences, Steven Gerrard clearly knows what the issues are, but there are few signs of him correcting them on the pitch. He may have a preferred system and he maybe waiting for the summer to hopefully get in players to help play it, but what about the here and now? Why not make adjustments and play to the strength of his current squad? Which is the not short on decent players and who didn’t come to Villa cheaply.

In the latest My Old Man Said podcast (listen above), we look at what went wrong against Spurs and air a few home truths. It’s a shorter match reaction type of episode, before the main show arrives in a couple of days time.
