Steven Gerrard’s Coutinho Question and the Emergence of Iroegbunam

Questions for Gerrard

Aston Villa got the job done against Norwich City, but there’s question marks over the performance against a lacklustre Canaries team despite the 2-0 win.

Probably the first question that was posed was should Villa break the bank to get the services of Philippe Coutinho in the summer, if he wants to join Villa full-time? Or, is Emiliano Buendía a better prospect for the longer-team in terms of over all team building, due to the tenacity and desire he has off the ball?

It’s perhaps unlikely both players will be started together often enough to satisfy the one that has to sit out. If Villa signed Coutinho, would he be considered undroppable? Despite his tendency to have quiet games occasionally.

As well as discussing that dilemna for Gerrard, we look at Tim Iroegbunam’s first start for Villa.

Tim Iroegbunam Starts

While Iroegbunam has a way to go before he can be considered the answer to Villa’s defensive midfield problems, he made his presence felt at times and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in.

“He’s still learning his way, still very young and raw,” admitted Steven Gerrard, in his press conference for the upcoming Burnley clash. “But I’m really excited to work with him moving forward.”

The Villa boss believes the 18-year-old is the real deal though, with plenty of upside.

“We believe we can develop him, polish him up and shape him into a strong Premier League player,” said Gerrard.

“I’m not surprised that, again, the fans are excited about this one. We talk about Carney, JJ and Tim and there’s more brewing in the background.

“Age, for us, is just a number. If they’re good enough and they deserve a chance, and they out-train senior peers within the group, they’ll be guaranteed opportunities here.”
