Today’s Petrov Charity Match is Hopefully a Step Towards Villa vs Celtic (updated)

Support Stan #19

Today at Halesowen Town Football Club, the extended Villa family of ex-players (and friends) will get together to honour Stan Petrov in a charity match that will see the likes of Ken McNaught, Sid Cowans, Steve Staunton, Ian Taylor and Gareth Farrelly, under the name of ‘Aston Villa Lions & Legends’  vs a Petrov’s XI team, anchored by the likes of Lee Hendrie, Michael Standing (Gareth Barry’s agent and former Villa academy player) and Seth Johnson.

Full details of today’s match

Pitch side at the game that kicks off at 1.30pm will be Gareth Barry, Ashley Young,  and Petrov himself.

In what should be a relaxed and enjoyable day out, it promises to be a good grassroots get together to honour both Villa’s captain and raise some money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Research.

UPDATE

Stan Petrov watches the charity match in his honour flanked by ex-Villan Gareth Barry.

The match finished Villa Lions & Legends 6 Petrovs X1 7 with one of the highlights a Lee Hendrie hat-trick. Over £9000 was raised.

Hopefully the game will also keep fresh in people’s minds both Aston Villa and Celtic supporter’s desire to see the ultimate tribute match for Petrov between the their two teams. A wish that was first aired by fans when the news of Petrov’s illness first broke and that MOMS helped get national press coverage for.

The dream game with the reunion of Petrov with both Paul Lambert and Neil Lennon has yet to be confirmed.

PS – Good luck to Villa Pete Gough for his 50 laps of Villa Park prior to the Arsenal game, with the ground doubling up as the mean streets of New York, due to the fact the Big Apple’s marathon was unfortunately cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Maybe if Pete paces himself, he can finish the final laps during the game and also run the lines for the match. I’m sure he’d do a better job than Adrian Holmes at the Etihad yesterday! Help Pete reach his target here
