Tough December Test Begins for Steven Gerrard After Perfect Start

Aston Villa’s Match Day Squad Grows Stronger for December

The tide is starting to turn in terms of Aston Villa having a full squad of players to chose from. The limitations in terms of playing the likes of the newly acquired Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia, together, certainly hamstrung Steven Gerrard’s predecessor, Dean Smith, at the start of the season.

The current Villa Head Coach though is swiftly gaining options, as he indicated in recent pre-match press conferences, when laying out the road map for the return of Trezeguet before the end of the year.

“Trezeguet is training well and he’s completed his first full week of training,” said, Gerrard, adding that he’ll play in an U-23’s game in the next few days.

“The idea with him will be to complete a second week and then look to get him some game minutes in an under-23 fixture.”

With Gerrard saying the Villa winger was “progressing well”, you would probably expect to see him in contention again come mid-December onwards.

With Morgan Sanson getting back to proper fitness and appearing on the bench in recent games, the only remaining long-term absence is Bertrand Traoré, who Gerrard describes as “some weeks away” from returning.

According to the Villa Head Coach, the winger will “return to training, hopefully, pre-Christmas”.

Meanwhile, it’s hoped that Danny Ings will be back at the weekend against Leicester City.

“He’s had a little bit of a setback from the previous injury,” concluded Gerrard. “Nothing major, but we had to put the brakes on for a few days at the least.”
