Unai Emery Must Do Something He’s Never Done Before to Keep his Villa Record

Emery’s Villa Away Form vs Emery’s Pep Record

Before Unai Emery arrived at Aston Villa, the club had failed to win any of their seven league away fixtures. Under Emery though, Villa have won all three games on their travels, including notable wins over top-half Brighton and Spurs. Their forthcoming trip to Manchester City is a another level of challenge though.

Emery has never beaten Pep Guardiola as a manager in 12 previous attempts, drawing four and losing eight. Then there’s Villa’s woeful away record at the Etihad, a stadium they haven’t won in the league at since 2007, losing all 12 matches since.

Still, Emery is conscious that his team has been better away, so far during his time at Villa.

“It’s very strange because at the beginning it was more difficult to play away and the challenge was to play away,” reflected Emery, at the pre-match press conference. “Now, we are taking points away [from home] and we are being very, very competitive away.”

While City have lost three out of their last six fixtures in all competitions, Emery added that he expects the recent off the field allegations against City to further galvanise them.

“I’ve played against Manchester City here and in the Champions League, it’s a very difficult match. Maybe it’s going to be more difficult now with the issues they are having.

“I think they’re going to be together and they are going to try and respond on the pitch against us.”

In the latest Something for the Weekend episode of the My Old Man Said podcast, we look at the current situation at the Etihad, while casting our memories back to the past couple of decades of Villa form against Manchester City. We also look at a possible tactical switch Emery maybe tempted to make to try and get something from the game.
