What Are Supporters’ Favourite Aston Villa Classic and Retro Shirts?

By Joshua Prior

MOMS got Villa supporter and owner of Vote Vintage, Joshua Prior, to have a look at the MOMS survey results of supporter’s Villa shirt preferences.

Football is big business and the replica shirt has become an increasingly integral part of it. The rampant commercialisation of English football in the last couple of decades (particularly since the formation of the Premier League) has given rise to the phenomenon of the replica jersey.

Whether it’s the latest £90 Nike Arsenal home shirt or an ’87 Hummel Villa shirt worn to within an inch of its existence – it is now more common to see a fan clad in their team’s colours than not.

New or Retro Villa?

Classic and retro shirts reign supreme down Villa Park with a whopping 54.3% of the 500 fan sample surveyed opting for nostalgia over newness, and as a vintage clothing shop owner myself, this makes me very happy indeed.

Perhaps this inclination for retro tops is a yearning for the good old days of league titles, cup wins and European nights down Villa Park, or maybe they just don’t make ‘em like they used to.

villa retro shirtsSecond on the list of popular game-going attire is the ever extortionate latest season’s shirt with 33.6% of you stumping up the hard cash to nail Villa’s spanking new colours to your backs.

Interestingly, a seemingly high 12.1% of fans who responded to our survey like to keep it old school by shunning the replica shirt altogether, which is perhaps understandable given our recent exploits in B6.

Favourite Villa Shirts

When it came down to the Battle of the Favourite Shirt it was a closely fought contest between the 1981 League Winners shirt and the 1982 home jersey. There was only a 1.1% difference in popularity with the shirts scoring 17.5% and 16.4% respectively.

Aston Villa 1981 Home ShirtUnsurprisingly home shirts came out on top in the survey, which is surely due to fans’ strong allegiance to our iconic claret and blue colours. Whilst the ’82 European Cup Final winning white away shirt, which Macron paid homage to with their white 2014/2015 away kit, came in a strong third.
