Where Do Aston Villa Fans Rate for Arrests, Villa Player Target and Perfect Complaint

Week’s AVFC News

The main news of the Villa week was Colin Calderwood finally being confirmed as Aston Villa’s assistant manager, after he left Brighton.

It doesn’t look like the Seagulls were too impressed by the move, but Steve Bruce and Technical Director Steve Round both seemed pleased by their new acquisition to the management team.

Some Villans will remember Calderwood for his brief stint as a Villa player under John Gregory.

Also in the news was talk of a potential swap deal of using Rudy Gestede as a make weight for Hull City’s Abel Hernandez. At the moment, it looks like Hernandez’s desire to leave Hull is the main reason for the rumours rather than actual interest from Bruce, who bought him to Hull in the first place.

The other main Villa stories are as follows…

Weight Off His Shoulders

After just four games for AEK Athens, Joleon Lescott’s Greek Odyssey is well and truly over, after the player and club parted ways.

Things didn’t start well after a crucial mistake in the derby match against rivals Olympiakos and it went downhill from there.

Reports in the Greek press suggest that although Lescott was recognised as having a decent enough attitude in training, he fell foul of a detached cartilage in his knee, which meant potentially a period of three months out, which was pretty much the catalyst for the Greek team to cancel his contract. Apparently the 34-year-old wanted to recuperate back in the UK, which AEK Athens wasn’t too impressed about.

Villa Fans Top 10 for Arrests

The Birmingham Mail reports from the Home Offices’ figures that 49 Aston Villa fans were arrested last season, putting them in the Top 10 clubs for fan arrests in England.

No guessing who topped the league of shame…Birmingham City fans chalked up 74 arrests putting them in number one spot, five above Millwall and six above Leeds.

Manchester City (66), Arsenal (60), Manchester United (57), Newcastle (52), Sunderland (51)  and Sheffield Wednesday (48) made up the rest of the top 10.

Perfect Complaint Letter

As we reported on MOMS earlier, Brighton CEO Paul Barber wrote a pitch perfect letter to Southern Rail on behalf of Brighton and Villa fans after the rail chaos caused by the rail company last Friday, before and after the evening fixture. Barber also set copies to local MPs and the government. If you haven’t read it yet, it’s a cracker – read it here.

Actual Brazilian Cafu

Despite already having the Scottish Cafu in their ranks in the shape of Alan Hutton, there have been reports circulating that Villa are monitoring Bulgarian Champions Ludogorets’ Brazilian right-winger Jonathan Cafu.

With Albert Adomah lost to the African Cup of Nations in January, a new wide option on the right is a possibility, but will the 25-year-old Cafu have long-term viability for the Villa squad in the future?

Villa technical director Steve Round took a trip midweek to potentially scout a Champions League game, so who knows, maybe Cafu was his target?
